Optical Diffusers

Optical diffusers scatter transmitted light to blend individual sources, reduce hot spots, soften reflections, enlarge the apparent source, and improve illumination uniformity.

A diffuser intentionally changes the direction of transmitted rays. Rather than preserving the original point-by-point appearance of an LED array, it mixes light over a broader range of directions.

Individual LEDs can appear as bright points, especially when the optical cover is close to the board. Diffusion can reduce the contrast between those points and the darker spaces around them.

Spacing Affects Source Blending

The distance between an LED array and diffuser can influence how well individual emitters blend. Increasing separation gives light more distance to spread before it reaches the diffuser, but also requires additional fixture depth.

LED pitch, diffuser properties, housing depth, and required brightness should therefore be considered together.

Glare

Enlarging the Apparent Source

A diffuser can create a larger luminous surface instead of exposing small high-intensity LED packages directly to the viewer.

This can change the visual character of the fixture and may help manage uncomfortable source brightness in some viewing conditions.

Machine vision and manual inspection of reflective components can benefit from larger, more diffuse sources because reflections become less concentrated than they would be with a small directional source.
