Windows to the Cosmos

Sputnik and the Dawn of the Space Age

The 50th anniversary of the Sputnik launching, a milestone event in the history of mankind, was commemorated at the French Senate (Palais du Luxembourg, Paris) under the title of "Windows to the Cosmos; Sputnik and the Dawn of the Space Age".

The meeting was organized by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES). Sputnik means travel companion in Russian, and it became an emblematic reference of the opening of the windows to the Universe, an objective underlying the Starlight initiative approach.

Participating in the meeting, among others, Francesco Bandarin, Director of UNESCO's World Heritage Centre, David Southwood, Director of ESA's Scientific Programme, Tobías Owen of the University of Hawaii, and Moebius.
